Job Title
Demolition Work in E11

Date Rated

Kate Aliwell

“Dan contacted me for a job where we asked him initially to demolish a sloping step & some flower beds. He came the first Saturday and after a short while realised that the area was actually going to need concrete/cement. He requoted for the adjusted job and said he could come back the following Sunday to complete it. I advanced him £100 towards materials so that he could come prepared. He arrived on the day without the materials, went out the first time for an hour and half to go fetch them, and then went out again later in the day he said to get more, so 3 hours wasted. As a result he was unable to finish the work before rain started. He returned the Monday morning early to complete the last little bit. At this point the concrete was wet, but starting to dry. I asked him why it was so lumpy and uneven and he said it would simply need sanding which he would do in the week. He agreed to come the Tuesday evening, but did not turn up, when I texted him he said he as on another job and had forgotten to let me know, the Wednesday he couldn’t come, the Thursday evening he turned up at 9pm (two hours later than agreed) and did not have his sanding equipment with him, but he removed the debris and the wooden plank on the side holding the platform up. This showed areas of gaps in the concrete. He said he would return on the weekend to patch them up and sand the surface. The surface is that uneven that when it rains large puddles sit on all those uneven parts long after the raj has gone. That weekend he turned up and filled in by hand the few gaps, and said that he didn’t have his sander with him as it was broken and that he could come back once it was fixed. I asked him to please hire a sander and I would pay for the hire so he could complete the work that day as I had guests following weekend. He went off to try and find one but I didn’t hear from him then for hours. Asked him if he could find one and he said no. I asked him to try hire one for the week and to let me know so I could plan my work schedule around him coming. He said he would let me know, but from that point onward I heard nothing and his intention became clear, he was not going to return as far as I could see. I finally sent him a message by WhatsApp, text and email letting him know that I was disappointed with the outcome and asking him to please let me know before the end of that day if he intended to come and finish the job. He read these as I saw a read receipt, but he did not reply. We paid him £400 in full and it didn’t occur to us to withhold some of the money until he came back to sand it as we had previously found him to be honest and genuine, but it soon transpired that he just saw us as two girls who wouldn’t know any better. I spoke to a neighbor who is a builder and he said that it’s been done to a very poor standard and that if the builder wasn’t capable of laying smooth concrete he should have used a layer of self-levelling compound at the top. As a result I’ve had to run around and spend unnecessary money on large rugs etc. to try and disguise the horrible surface in the meantime. I’m so disappointed and angry at the money I’ve spent on the poor workmanship that he has delivered.”
