Gas Safety – Using a Gas Safe registered engineer

Gas SafeWhat is Gas Safe?

Gas Safe is the official list of gas engineers across the UK who are registered to work safely and legally on fires, cookers, boilers and all other gas appliances. It replaced the CORGI gas registration scheme as the official gas safety body on the 1st of April 2009. The register currently has over 125,000 certified gas engineers and aims to maintain gas safety to the highest standards.

Any work which involves gas in your property must be carried out by a member of the Gas Safe register for it to be legally compliant. A Gas Safe engineer has been checked to make sure they are competent and their work is of a high enough standard.

It is also very important that the engineer provides you with their Gas Safe card for which you will need top check the following things:

  1. Their photo – make sure the person doing the work is the person registered

  2. The start and expiry date – never accept an out of date card

  3. The licence number – make sure this corresponds with their Gas Safe profile online

  4. The security hologram

  5. The engineer is qualified to do the work they are about to undertake

  6. That their qualifications are up to date

Point 5 is very important, not all registered companies are certified to carry out all types of gas works – if in doubt contact Gas Safe directly to make sure they are covered for the work they will be doing for you. For help with ID cards see here.

If you are using a general builder or building project manager to manage your work then it is their responsibility to make sure any gas work involved is carried out by a legally registered tradesperson.
